The highest of the Howgill fells, The calf lies along a long ridge of hills that reach over 2,000ft. The Calf, along with Bram Rigg Top and Great Dummacks, forms the central hub of the Howgills though it lacks definition from the surrounding fells.
The summit comprises a grassy plateau with a white painted trig point at the highest point. It is also home to a rare feature in the Howgills, a small tarn.
Being sandwiched between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, The Calf does have some very good views, especially towards the Lake District, the mountainous profile stretching out across the horizon.
