“Fashions change. When people climbed hills for the sake of the views, the heathery summit of Glenridding Dodd must have been more frequented than it is today, for once-popular paths are now overgrown and neglected. It occupies a grand position overlooking Ullswater”.
Glenridding Dodd stands at the end of a ridge descending from Stybarrow Dodd with a col separating it from the south-east ridge of Sheffield Pike. Its name simply translates to “the rounded hill above Glenridding“.
It is a small fell measuring only 1 km in length and less than that in width, and its highest point rises to only 442m. Yet it is a fine viewpoint over Ullswater, nearly 300m below.
The top of Glenridding Dodd is a short ridge, with patches of heather, rocky knolls and marshy hollows. The highest point, at the western end, is marked by a small cairn, but better views of Glenridding and almost the whole of Ullswater may be had from the eastern end of the ridge where the ground falls steeply away.
