What Wainwright said:
“Dove Crag is a mountain of sharp contrasts. The the east, its finest aspect, it presents a scarred and rugged face, a face full of character and interest. Very different is its appearance from other directions. A high ridge runs south, with featureless grass slopes flowing down from it to the valleys below.”
Dove Crag forms part of the legendary Fairfield Horseshoe, a popular ridge walk from either Ambleside or Rydal though the best views of the fell are via a direct ascent from Patterdale. On the summit stands a rock platform and a loose cairn.
Dove Crag’s place in history is assured as it was the first ever chapter written by Alfred Wainwright in 1952 after he started Book One, The Eastern Fells.
