| The summit of Barrow overlooking Derwentwater |
What Wainwright had to say:
“Barrow occupies an enviable position overlooking a scene fair as any in the kingdom. In shape a long narrow ridge, rooted in Braithwaite, it rises to present a broad flank to the valley of Newlands, before curving west to join the mass of Outerside”.
Barrow is a slender ridge that climbs out of Braithwaite. Though modest in height, the summit’s location at the end of a ridge ensures that the views are extensive. Skiddaw presents a particularly pleasing panorama in the distance. Barrow, like an ancient burial mound, gets its name from the Anglo Saxon word meaning hill or long ridge.
The summit is marked by a small cairn located on the turfy covering.
